What to expect:

My initial assessment will involve getting a thorough history about your horse prior to any treatment. This could last up to an hour.

EQUINE HOLISTIC

THERAPY

This video demonstrates 2 of the traditional massage techniques: effleurage - warming up the muscles prior to the application of the wringing technique which stimulates the circulation. Observe how my mare responds with her ears, eyes softening and increasingly droopy lower lip !

DISCLOSURE:
I am a Registered Equine Massage Therapist. I work within my duty of care at all times. My area of expertise is the horses muscular system and its corresponding physiological effects. I have been trained to evaluate, locate and treat muscles and muscular related conditions. I am not a veterinary surgeon and I will always recommend that a horse be referred back to its vet should I deem this necessary if its condition is outside any area of my professional field.

I like to see the horse 'trotted up' and, if possible, being ridden. I will then decide on the appropriate routine. Depending on his character your horse may take a while to accept the massage applications.

I use natural horsemanship to communicate and gain trust with your horse along with soft stroking massage to promote relaxation. All my massage routines will incorporate preventative, healing or maintenance stretches.

Case study cards are issued for all the horses that I visit.

When I first visit a client with their horse I would have already obtained some general information from the horse owner or groom (owners permission needed before massage commences) at the time of booking. This way, I have a good idea, though not an expectation of possible requirements and needs of the horse.

A chat with the horse's owner or groom on the difficulties their horse is experiencing, how long and when they are more noticeable.

Conformation assessment of the horse along with the general working routine and whether their horse lives in or out.

Establish tack and rugs used, when and why.

Establish a general overview of their horses diet.

Assess your horses general gaits in walk and trot both straight and lateral.

I always introduce myself to your horse, accustoming him to my smell, voice and general presence around him whilst gaining a general overview of his character.

Before beginning the appropriate massage treatment, I explain to the owner / groom what I shall be doing and why as well as explain what the horse will experience.

Upon completion of the initial Massage session I introduce the horse to some gentle stretches relative to his condition, which again I explain to the owner (groom).

The session is ended with a chat to the owner on the findings and my recommendations on future care such as future massages and stretching programmes that the owner can incorporate into their horses day to day care routine that can help, heal and prevent certain difficulties personal to the horse with my findings on this first visit.

I always provide a fully detailed case report upon every massage visit.

Massage day clinics are always a fun and fascinating experience, for both horses and humans. If you and some of your friends would like to have a massage clinic held at your stables, riding school or livery yard these can be arranged. Personally arranged clinics include all massage subjects, though can also be tailored to include the amount of people attending, location of your establishment, your horses working disciplines together with any specific subjects that you may require a more in-depth review of.
