Will my horse enjoy his massage and how will I know?

Oh yes! Just as us humans move our bodies to release the experience of a pain or tension, so do our horses. Your horses personal signs of pleasure from massage are visible signs of relaxation such as deeper breathing (even groaning), sleepiness, the lowering of the neck, head, eyelids, tail and shoulders. On areas experiencing the release of tension or pain, the horse will often lean or stretch into the therapists massage application. The horse beginning to lick and chew in satisfaction is also a common sign of pleasure.

What can my horse and I expect from the first massage?
Massage on its own will always provide positive effects on the healthy horse. However, do bear in mind the following very valid points.
The first massage will provide positive and effective results to most horses.
Initial changes are usually seen within the horses character, either calmer and more relaxed or more alert depending upon the techniques and applications used and required.
The following time you ride your horse (advised to wait 24 hours) you may experience your horses more relaxed and free flowing strides
More noticeable changes and healing obtained through Equine Massage Therapy will take on average between 3 or 4 sessions, performed between every 4 - 7 days, depending upon your horses working discipline, general fitness,  general day to day care and regular maintenance routine.
The first appropriate equine massage therapy session will:
Provide relief to your horse from his muscular tension.
Provide benefits from waking up sluggish circularatory systems giving your horse a more relaxed lighter feel to his body.
Enhance his proprioceptive sense
These benefits will not remain a permanent part of his life unless incorporated into his general maintenance and day to day routine care.
What happens during the first massage consultation?
When I first visit a client with their horse I would have already obtained some general information from the horse owner or groom (owners permission needed before massage commences) at the time of booking. This way, I have a good idea, though not an expectation of possible requirements and needs of the horse.
I have a chat with the horses owner or groom on the difficulties their horse is experiencing, how long and when they are more noticeable.
I carry out Conformation assessment of the horse along with the general working routine and whether their horse lives in or out.
Establish tack and rugs used, when and why.
Establish a general overview of their horses diet.
Assess your horses general gaits in walk and trot both straight and lateral.
I always introduce myself to your horse, accustoming him to my smell, voice and general presence around him whilst gaining a general overview of his character.
Before beginning the appropriate massage treatment , I explain to the owner / groom what I shall be doing and why as well as explain what the horse will experience.
Upon completion of the initial Massage session I introduce the horse to some gentle stretches relative to his condition, which again I explain to the owner (groom).
The session is ended with a chat to the owner on the findings and my recommendations on future care such as future massages and stretching programmes that the owner can incorporate into their horses day to day care routine that can help, heal and prevent certain difficulties personal to the horse with my findings on this first visit.
I always provide a fully detailed case report upon every massage visit.
